Welshmans Nelson investment sees 9967% return….

April 26th, 2012

….in less than one week, and its not over yet!

True Story.

According to the local paper, the Nelson Mail, Welsh tourist & backpacker Tim Bow likes garage sales. Using the words of the papers reporter, it would seem he even appears to have “a passion” for it.

Well it looks like this passion has really paid off for the traveler this time around.

Antiques Roadshow would have a simple antipodean believe that in smalltown NZ, only 200 year old Aoteroa, there just aren’t any surprises left to be found?

...this is the cover of the book he found in a box.....

Well this Welshman found one, locally, last weekend.

...and inside this book, in this $5 box of books, he found this.....

Here’s the kicker….

He bought the book as part of a $5 pile of books in the sale, but hoped to sell it for much more.

Is he on the right track here?

Well..….with still three days still to go on his auction site listing…his $5 investment is sitting there on the Trademe auction site, as of last glance, at a “not too unhealthy bid level” of NZD$1500.

Interesting to see he is thinking of the Commonwealth too, after Trademe user “Vat” asked Tim, whether he thought USA based Ebay would have given him a better shot of the $$$……

Tim replied above….

Perhaps even, the Enid Blyton society may look “downunder.” As a youngster I read all the books, and absolutely loved them all. Today….all of them put together would probably account for the first half of the first episode of some Xbox/Playstation shoot’em up.

But….. back then, they let your imagination do what it was really meant too!

Sunday, even apart from this Indian Summer weather we are all finding “most enjoyable”, should be an interesting day.

UPDATE 10:15am 27-04-2012 – bidding now at NZD$3260!! I’m thinking everyone will be checking books at yard/garage/boot sales just a little bit more thoroughly now? Lets hope they are genuine bids.

UPDATE: 8:16pm 29-04-2012 – seems the gene pool has again been hammered tonight, after it eventuated that the winning bid was reduced to NZD$1510. Perhaps a spell on Ebay may have been worth a hit.

UPDATE: 5:45pm 30-03-2012 – seems its all downhill from here.

Could Nelson be on track for a World Record?

April 18th, 2012

Perhaps, if the past weeks events unfold at the speed at which they have, the answer is quite probably, yes.

Like a bolt out of the blue, and according to the TV interview with John Campbell this 616kg monster is what John McKay has achieved after only 18 months…what does the future hold?

Well for a start, Johns daughter Anika made the podium too, her efforts earning her 2nd place in the same competition.

To see whats “in the local water” and watch the video interview, head on over to Nelsonians Life.

Tahunanui Beach, Nelson very high and low tides this weekend

Saturday, April 7th 2012

Around about this time of year each year, very close to the full moon,

the place in New Zealand with the highest tides, also sees some of NZ’s lowest tides.

There is no better place to see and experience that for yourself than down at our “world famous in NZ” beach, Tahunanui. one of New Zealands favourite family beaches,

and not far away from NZ’s and the Southern Hemispheres largest motor camp, the Tahuna Beach holiday camp. Whether it was kids building sandcastles,

or young girlfriends getting some snaps for their future modelling portfolios, everyone was smiling.

Yesterday afternoon, my lovely wife & I decide to go for a stroll.

However whence one noted no parking for 100′s of metres, it turned out I wasn’t the only one that was thinking this way on a glorious, typically sunny Nelson afternoon.

No, it turned out to be us, and about 5 ~ 600 others had exactly the same idea, Good Fridays version of an “Indian Summer” ……

….had everyone out enjoying it. With such a low tide, I just had to see how far you could walk out….

and if you check my Panoramio page here, you’ll see exactly what I mean, a fair distance to put it midly.

So don’t forget, today around 4pm and tomorrow Sunday about 4:45pm, there are very low tides late each afternoon, head on down and experience it for yourself. Even saw some folk swimming, must be from Invercargill I reckon? :-)

Air New Zealand on new initiatives…

April 1st

Being at the bottom of the world seems to have its benefits.

Launch customer for the 787-9, our own “best airline in the world”, has shown Boeing an extra big vote of confidence this past week, confirming an order with the Seattle airframer for a further two of the composite carbon fibre beauties. (about here I am wondering  what colour they’ll be painted)

Hot on the heels of the World First “Skybed”, Air New Zealand this morning, NZ time, April 1st, launched yet another world first, in announcing after exhaustive studies, the public were to be offered “StraightUp” airfares.

...cheap fares - but you better be real quick...

Seems that it was just “tooooo popular” because now you can’t book them,

apparently the public response……”it was incredible” according to Captain (new recruit still awaiting NZ residency) Flash Gordon.

Upper graphic depicts normal fare – as compared to “deluxe” pictured here just above…

According to a reporter on the scene at the very casual and un-announced press conference this morning, a statement was voiced very quickly by an english based scribe, who was heard to say….

thats just typical of you Kiwis’s…always attempting to “one-up” those of us from the “home country.”

…. then, his mobile phone rang …after about 10 seconds he was heard loudly to voice “Richard Branson is really going to do that!!”

It seems Virgin Airlines have also tried to take Air New Zealands thunder on this auspicious day, with the launch of Virgin Volcanic.
