Agents: your next Smartphone is….
Feb 11th, 2010
Would you like some Android with that……..
What a difference a year makes in the technology stakes department.
After exploding out of the gate in 2009, Android devices continue their astounding marketshare rampup.
- Worldwide Smartphone Sales to End Users by Operating System in 2010
- (Thousands of Units)
Actually, if you check out the above graph, you can see that even application developers have no choice, on a purely business basis, to also join that march.
Gartner (Feb 2011) report;
In the smartphone operating system (OS) market, ”Android grew 888.8 percent in 2010 and moved to the No. 2 position. Android sales in the fourth quarter of 2010 continued to be driven by broad availability of many high-end products from HTC (Desire range, Incredible and EVO), Samsung (Galaxy S) and Motorola (Droid X, Droid 2).
Maybe iPhone 5 will change that, but something tells me, maybe ……
Question – Westpac & realestate.co.nz, ANZ, National Bank, NZPost, Kiwibank, etal plus others like FixmyStreet. ….. isn’t it about time for an Android version of your apps?
DISCLOSURE – I do not own an iPhone, I happen to be in the Samsung Galaxy space.

Very short answer – why did Realesatate.co.n z build an iPhone before an Android app?
There are estimated to be anywhere north of 220,000 iPhones in NZ – as far as Android – estimates appears to show around 35,000.
You build first to where the demand is. Then you build to where the demand is going to be.
By Christmas 2011 I am confident there will be more Android devices than iPhones and well before then Realestate.co.nz will have an Android app.

Guess that’s understandable and prudent in the overall business case situation.
As I mentioned what a difference 12mths can make in the Tech market.
Just seems that overall Tech has always been about pushing the boundaries. With all the fanfare (MWC timing) that so many new smartphone hardware releases are gathering currently, one can be left with the impression that sometimes the apps are too far behind.
Also feel it would be beneficial to see some more client engagement and interaction with the location awareness apps, sort of in a FixmyStreet or Waze sort of way?
Heck….maybe Open Home visitors could have a public / or private way of rating a property, out of 10 stars, straight from their mobile, or even if they thought much of the presentation/price or agent???
Will watch with interest how the year pans out, least you don’t have to worry about a Symbian port now I guess.
