Prince Phillip likes NZs population numbers …..

Prince Philip blasts supermarkets, and second-home owners.

Reportedly by various sources the Prince has told Shooting Times in an interview that ………

“There are now 60 million people living in this country and we are about the same land size as New Zealand … this country had three million people in Elizabeth I’s day.”

Obviously hes talking about the old dart, but he is certain to pip some interest in this part of the Commonwealth by mentioning our zone.

They also created the “bizarre” situation in which a bottle of milk costs less than a bottle of water, he said.

These comments came, from what the paper calls “the notoriously straight-talking Duke of Edinburgh” when he was interviewed about current events, including present intensive industrial farming methods.

The gist of the interview seemed to be — lamenting the demise of the charming ole English village.

Well fortunately here in New Zealand we still have that village atmosphere in many many locations, many of which are are scattered throughout our region.

For example the town of Brightwater, near Nelson, which now has a higher percentage of recent English immigrants than any other town in NZ, 1 in 10 of its current residents, must have some “reassuring” factor about it too I think.

Perhaps that’s also what the “Charming Town” award bestowed on Nelson by Tripadvisor a few months ago was about, as well?

Although we weren’t number 1, we were still up there  – Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford upon Avon was 1st. It was the only town in the UK named in the TripAdvisor poll, second place going to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, and us here down-under in Nelson coming in as second runner up.

The Daily Telegraph reported the Duke as saying;

“There has been a complete change in the population of the countryside”

With his typical forth rightness he told the various media, of which they have quoted him as saying;

“They are constantly trying to produce cattle that will produce more milk and less cow – like a hatrack with an udder attached”

Kind of makes you wonder how long we can keep our population under 5 million, doesn’t it?

Perhaps the fact that Jet fuel costs are constantly increasing, may actually start to become viewed as a positive for us down under.
