This week former Olympic rower and bronze medalist Nathan Twaddle has lent his weight to a proposed Watersport Course at Rabbit Island. Plans for the $6 million watersport course have been proposed by Tasman Aquatic Multi-Sport Development Trust.
Rabbit Island is just a short drive from Nelson / Richmond and the proposed course was to be developed at the western end of the Island.
Both of our children have been involved with rowing, and considering the only real options someone from Nelson would currently have for National Competitions , would be a trip to Twizel or on the ferry to Lake Karapiro up north, this addition to the Nelson landscape would just be fantastic.
Kiwis have done well in recent years at rowing, and every opportunity to encourage this sport should be welcomed with open arms. As far as sport with a low resource impact on the environment its got to rank right up there.
Recently the Nelson Mail published this below response from Rowing NZ’s PR man……
The PR man, Richard Gee of Rowing New Zealand, might argue that the lake could give both the sport and Nelson a huge boost. The Nelson Rowing Club’s vice-president, Kevin Strickland, might be able to point to a local fraternity with a big reputation 31 national titles in the past three years, 11 Nelson rowers in national teams in the past eight years, top rowing club in New Zealand in 2007 that is crying out for such a facility.
With the World Rowing Champs being held in New Zealand next year, now is the time.
