In what is now the third largest sports event of its type in the world, the next IRB Rugby World Cup will take place in New Zealand from 9 September to 23 October 2011.
The inaugural tournament took place in 1987 and the tournament has been conducted every four years since.
In fantastic local news, Nelson has been chosen as a venue to hold pool matches for the event.
Thirteen venues across New Zealand have been chosen to host pool matches for Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011
“Each region has shown a strong desire to help us deliver a world class tournament and also to deliver a memorable national Rugby World Cup festival which realises our “Stadium of four million” philosophy and which carries with it a uniquely kiwi flavour,” – Martin Snedden CEO Rugby World Cup 2011
Nelson’s involvement will see us hosting Italy in the tournaments second week, where they meet an as yet unknown opponent from the European qualification group on Tuesday, September 20. Then a week later, on September 27, Italy will play a team from the Americas qualification group.
Local city councillor Aldo Miccio told the Nelson Mail that Nelson had lobbied hard for Italy to play matches at Trafalgar Park, drawing on the city’s Italian heritage and community. He went on…. “The one thing that the Rugby World Cup Ltd understood was that Italy made sense for Nelson, and that’s why we bid for them.”
He also mentioned that Rugby NZ 2011 is still working out which cities will host teams, but he was confident that Italy would be based in Nelson.
