Just after I mention about English Immigrants a few posts ago, a couple come through one of my Open Homes Sunday afternoon. Want to hear something funny?
They were worried that if they liked it, they wouldn’t know how to tell their friends and family about this fantastic place that they had traveled half way around the world to live, with the following exotic sounding kiwi address
….they thought that with an address like this, their friends and family back home wouldn’t believe that they had ever left England!
Actually there is quite some background to our region having upmteen parks, streets & places with very english sounding names. Like many NZ towns we have streets named Devon, Leicester, Avalon, Dickens, Cornwall, Essex, Liverpool, Manchester, Thames, Durham, etc. After all we were one of the first 5 settlements set up by The New Zealand Company way back then.
And its not a coincidence that in our suburb we have the oldest primary school in New Zealand. Stoke Primary is now, after Wakefield ( also in our region) the second oldest continuous public school both in Nelson and the whole of New Zealand.
So its fair to say that UK immigrants have been coming here for a while!
…and just to make you feel like you’ve had a proper history lesson continue here……
