Reflections on the 2008 REINZ Conference and AGM

Last week the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand held its 2008 Annual General Meeting and conferences in Rotorua. While I was unable to attend every event I did make time to be present at the AGM and Business Brokers Conference – aside from these two events there were also specific seminars for the Commercial & Industrial, the Residential, and the Property Manager’s groups.

A variety of topics were presented at the Business Broker’s Conference including a presentation given by Niamh McMahon, Partner with McMahon Butterwort Thompson Lawyers. Niamh spoke of the changes to the Property Law Act (2007) and gave particular reference to how these changes will impact on business and commercial sales.

Later in the day, Jeff Owens, Chartered Accountant, Owens Tax Advisors Ltd discussed income tax and GST implications relating to the sale of businesses and commercial properties. Both these presentations and the topics covered are very relevant to brokers and I know I took a stack of notes.

The business brokers were also provided the chance to participate in panel discussions and workshops.

As is usual at such an event and aside from the structured presentations, there was invaluable opportunity to network amongst fellow professionals from throughout the country and from all real estate disciplines. I find I gain as much from this more spontaneous contact with peers as I do from the formal presentations.

The collective wealth of experience and knowledge with regard to the real estate industry contained in one place is too good a chance to miss. Involvement at industry wide conferences such as this helps to broaden perspectives which one could never gain from working with the one company.

Valuable contacts and alliances are created along with renewing friendships from previous years. The free and frank exchange of ideas and information is fantastic – as always I returned to my own part of the country pleased that I had taken the time to attend.

During the AGM the Declaration of the Election of Councilors was announced, the councilors are as follows:

Mike Elford National President Edinburgh Realty Ltd
Murray Cleland Immediate Past President Century 21 Countrywide Real Estate Ltd
Peter McDonald Vice President McDonald Real Estate Ltd
Jean Smith Councilor Barfoot and Thompson Ltd
Bill Cooney Councilor Cooney Property Ltd
Mark Winter Councilor Oyster Property Group Ltd
Mike Pinkney Councilor North Shore 1st National
Peter Neylon Councilor Canterbury Properties Ltd
Neville Falconer Councilor Realty Link Ltd
