Century 21 Real Estate, NZ Convention 2008

Posted on: April 20th, 2008 | Filed in Real Estate Industry News

Century 21 held its New Zealand Convention on the 16th and 17th of April at Waipuna in Auckland.

I was pleased to attend and listen to the excellent speakers as well as network with other Century 21 colleagues from around the country and check out the latest and greatest innovations from the sponsors.

We were welcomed to the convention by Murray Cleland, President of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) as well as the Managing Director of Century 21 New Zealand.  Murray, through his position with REINZ was able to present an informed update on the process of the Real Estate Agents Bill currently before the parliamentary select committee.   At this stage of the process the select committee is hearing submissions and their report is due by 10 June 2008.

There is an enormous level of interest in the Real Estate Agents Bill both from within the industry and from the public – hardly surprising given the amount of publicity the media choose to dedicate to the topic.

Another speaker of note, Alistair Helm, CEO of Realestate.co.nz Ltd gave an excellent presentation which included, among other points of interest, up to the minute statistics on the current market situation of real estate within New Zealand.

While undoubtedly total sales have declined noticeably comparative to a year ago it appears that the median price is holding fairly steady.  Alistair expands on this further in his blog; Latest REINZ sales statistics show no clear direction on price. While having a look at this article check out some of the others, Alistair adds a regular stream of interesting and thought provoking content on a variety of topics relevant to the real estate industry.

Realestate.co.nz Ltd is a wholly owned industry website and it is heartening to see that this site which Alistair and his team have created for us leads in innovation, usability and functionality.

The conference went like clockwork thanks to the admirable organisational skills of Treena Drinnan, Franchise Manager of Century 21 NZ and her staff. I believe all attending came away having benefited in a great many ways.

Century 21 is the largest real estate organisation in the world, operating in around 60 countries, yet they never lose sight of the fact that people are their best property.  As salespeople we are shown this through the huge support and networking opportunities provided on a day to day basis as well as throughout the year at events such as this conference and regular seminars.

Having this level of national and global support can only benefit our sellers and buyers.

Article Discussion

  1. Sharon,

It was a great opportunity to meet you and your colleagues at the conference. The market as you say may be quiet as regards sales volumes – however this industry is never dull.

There is always an exciting opportunity and challenge for those who see this industry as a professional career and who want to stay informed and up to date with developments. I relish the opportunity to talk to real estate agents and share my experience and knowledge.

I echo your thanks to Murray and Treena – an excellent conference – a real pleasure to attend.

  2. Hi Sharon,

I was also one of your colleagues from the Botany Century 21 office that attended the conference last week. It was great to see the continued positivity in the market particularly from agents working in the industry. There has been far too much gloom and doom and a fresh postive perspective is always welcomed.

We are a professional industry and people always need to buy and sell whether it be residential, investment properties or businesses and if you are buying and selling in the same market you should only be endeavouring to get the best at the market time.

Like both yourself and Alistair – it was a real pleasure to attend.
