Aussies eye NZ property websites as much as job sites

Posted on: July 17th, 2009 | Filed in International, Website searching

The statistics released today by Nielsen Online showing the level of interest in NZ job websites is also naturally reflected in the level of interest shown by Australians looking at property websites.

As the NZ Herald reports in June 51,097 unique browsers from Australia viewed NZ job sites – an increase of 30% on September last year . At the same time 82,684 unique browsers from Australia viewed NZ property websites – a smaller 2% increase on September last year, fairly closely matchingt he growth in NZ traffic.

Clearly job searching is a precursor to any move and therefore property search may well lag behidn the forward trend. However the scale of traffic is certain an indicator to the overall level of interest by Australians in our country.

In analysing the data I was drawn to the relative strength of the realestate.co.nz website to Australians searching for NZ properties. Based on traffic (unique browsers) the website was ranked 11th placed of all NZ websites. However when judged on the metric of engagement which is the total time spent on the site it was ranked the 5th most actively used NZ website ! An amazing 15,500 hours in the month of June.

Perhaps many ex-pats are looking back at home where the green shoots may look greener. At the same time it would be interesting to see any stats on job searches on NZ sites where the browser initiated in Australia. Even a chart of interest in both together would be interesting?

For clarification the data above shows the number of people (unique browsers) in Australian viewing NZ job site like Seek.

The Aussies may be looking at real estate on trade me as well, which could make property 1 and 5 in the list.

  4. Steve,

Good point – just to provide the complete picture in June Trade me property which is included as part of the Trade me total website had 24,187 unique browsers from Australia – so this shows that realestate.co.nz attracted around 60% more Australians searching for NZ property than Trade me property for the month of June.

  5. My family and I are ex-pats looking to come home and are frequent viewers of the trademe, seek and realestate.co.nz websites. I search the job vacancies on trademe and seek every day. There are a lot of homesick Kiwis over here, just check out the airnz.com.au, home sweet home blogs.

  6. Rebecca,

Thanks for drawing attention to the Air NZ site – love the thread “John Key wants us to go home…” and the answers – what would it take:

    - Id move home for a ticket to an all blacks game.

    - If New Zealand payed the same wages i`m earning here, then yes i would come back home!

    - …only if i can change my bank to WESTPAC…buahahahaha!!!!

    - If they could drag NZ around to the coast of Perth here I would relocate immediately! Sunshine and beaches – gorgeous weather all year around – who can go past it!
