Wallpaper or Paint – What Works Best And Adds Value?

Braden asks:

I’m preparing my Freemans Bay ’ex-council’ apartment for sale. I’m not sure whether to paint the walls or use wallpaper. What would you recommend?

Anthea Baker-Shreeve from Homebase answers:

It is more modern nowadays to paint the whole house in basically the same colour. Feature walls are not longer painted but instead wallpapered in bold colours or patterns.

If the house is already wallpapered and you are looking to replace it, it is cheaper and easier to replace the wallpaper rather than paint. With painting there is a lot more prep work needed to get it back to a paintable finish. Resene have a very good basic range of wallpapers which co-ordinate with their paint colours. One suggestion I would make if you are looking to save yourself some money when it comes to wallpaper, select one that is New Zealand made and one with no pattern repeat.
